True to size is a phrase with several meanings. If you are a consumer, true to size indicates that the clothing you are considering in any given size is almost equal in size to a garment or garments you normally wear. It matters nothing if you are the manufacturer since there is no industry standard for sizes. According to garment manufacturers, there is a perpetual conflict between their Production and Sales departments. Production strives to extract as many things / shirts / pants as possible from a single unit of fabric, whilst Sales recognizes that consumers weigh more than they used to but refuse to accept it – therefore Sales wants the clothes to be larger than they used to be, which requires more fabric per piece.
“Does this clothing run huge or small?” is a similar remark. For the same reason stated above, such question cannot be answered honestly. When asked whether a (for example) size medium runs large or small, the vendor responds with another inquiry, asking: Run big or tiny in comparison to what?
Consequently, unlike other units of measurement such as ounces or inches, garment sizes are approximate, and no two items of the same design and size on a clothes retailer’s rack will be precisely the same.
