The PlayStation 3 is a console that has been on the market since 2006. It was Sony’s first major foray into Blu-ray technology and brought an entirely new level of games to consoles by being able to run older PS2 software through compatibility mode, as well as its own proprietary architecture. The system went on to sell nearly 80 million units despite now being discontinued in Japan.
The “PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility?” is a question that has been asked for a long time. Sony has recently announced their plans to release the PS2 on the PlayStation 4.
The PS3 40GB is NOT backwards compatible. Backward compatibility is limited to three PS3 models: the 20GB PS3 (CECHB01), the 60GB PS3 (CECHA01), and the MotorStorm with MGS4 80GB Limited Edition Bundle PS3s (CECHE01).
The 20GB and 60GB models can play 99 percent of PS2 games, while the MotorStorm with MGS4 80GB Limited Edition Bundle PS3 model can play 80 percent of PS2 titles. All PS3s can play a limited number of PS1 titles.
The 40GB PS3 was introduced in November 2007, replacing the 20GB PS3 (the Limited Edition 80GB Bundles took the place of the 60GB PS3). The most sought-after PS3 is the 60GB model, which can play 99 percent of PS2 titles. The 20GB PS3 can do the same, however it is the only PS3 without built-in Wi-Fi (it can be obtained with an Ethernet Bridge).
Your PS3 can play a limited number of PS1 games, but it cannot play PS2 games, and there is nothing you can do to force it to do so.
